Ayyangar full name is Mandyam Osuri Parthasarathy Iyengar. He researched different types of Algae. He studied structure, cytology, reproduction and taxonomy of majar group of algae. He is also known as "Father of Indian Phycology" or " Father of Algology in India".
Professor Iyengar served a major part of his life teaching at the Precidency college.madras and the last dozen years as a Professor at the new esatblished University Research Labortoy at Madras. After retierment he was with facilities to work at home and he did so till the end.He aimed to obtain a comprehensive knowledge of India's algal wealth, its diversity and ecology.Teaching and research had to be oriented towards understanding our algae. Their morphology, reproductive features, ecology and so on. Before Iyengar's time ,we lacked working models of algae found and studied here.We depended on those that did n't belong to our environment and biological features were n't known to us. Our knowledge of Indian algal flora was minimal. It depended solely on the contributions of a few travelling, where primary base was out side India.
